BWF World Championships 2026

It’s a huge moment for Badminton North Harbour, with Edward Lau and Shaunna Li selected to represent New Zealand at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi, India.
The prestigious championships will take place from 17–23 August at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, marking the 30th edition of the BWF World Championships and the first time the event has returned to India in 17 years.
A World Stage Awaits
Edward and Shaunna will compete across Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles, taking on the world’s best players at one of badminton’s biggest events.
Both North Harbour players have earned their place through their world ranking and Oceania qualification. They are the highest-ranked New Zealand players inside the world’s Top 150, while also securing the Continental (Oceania) place in their respective events, earning their qualification for the 2026 World Championships.
The draw for the championships will take place on 5 August, when Edward and Shaunna will discover who they will face in their opening matches.
Sharing the Court with the World’s Best
The World Championships will bring together some of the biggest names in international badminton, including Olympic champion An Se Young, Akane Yamaguchi, Chen Yufei and Indian superstar and local favourite P.V. Sindhu.
For Edward and Shaunna, it will be an incredible opportunity to compete against the very best and gain valuable experience on the world stage.
Representing New Zealand at a World Championships is a significant achievement, and having two North Harbour players competing at the same event is something our association can be incredibly proud of.
